Wide Range in 4 new flavors

Wide Range Extra

The Wide Range large format design in 4 new flavors that you will want to build a project guitar for just to get a pair of these in your collection.  The Wide Range format is bigger all round than a regular standard humbucker so we ran with the extra space under the cover and designed a truly unique pickup that produces some unique sounds.

We didn’t set out to replicate Fenders 70’s Wide Range humbucker.  No, we wanted to do something different but in the process we actually did come close to the sound of an original with the WR Extra version.   What we came up with is 4 new flavors produced from this very sophisticated Kinman humbucker.

We did what everyone else thinks is impossible, we devised a method of threading Alnico rod magnets to make them individually height adjustable.  We do not use the FeCrCo threaded magnets that every other maker uses for convenience because we wanted to avoid the brash, spikey and unpleasant treble sound those kinds of threaded magnets produce.  Our special threaded Alnico magnets are the same ones we use in all our Fender style pickups, the ones we call Alnico-K (for Kinman) and don’t they sound super!!!  And they don’t loose magnetism over time like Cunife magnets do and they don’t pull on the strings like regular Alnico-5 does, these are just magical magnets.

Another important improvement:  We make our magnet spacing in 3 different spreads so the strings will be directly over the magnets giving you optimum string-over-magnet alignment.  Fenders original (and recreated WR) was made wrong and the E-1st string aligned halfway between the E & B magnets, that was a terrible blunder and you can learn of the many improvements in our What's New article.  If you are fortunate enough to have Fenders latest American Original 70s Telecaster® Custom, swap their Wide Range and bridge pickups out for ours and you'll feel the difference and hear the improvement right away.

Here’s the line up.

  • WR-P90-Bucker  ~ Huge lucious low with beautiful sound, extremely dynamic
  • WR-Twang-Bucker ~ You've never heard twang like this one produces
  • WR-Extra ~ This one is similar to the original 70’s Fender pickup (we think it's actually better because a) our special magnets possess unique characteristics and b) our unique construction technique allow for all kinds of improvements.

On top of all of that the WR Extra can be split to terrific P90-like single coil sound with Zero-Hum and to cap it off the Heavy and Lite versions can come in the same pickup with a switch that selects which sound you need at the time.  Choose your weapons in the ordering channel.

NOTE: Our Tele Bridge Blaster is a beyond excellent companion standard format Tele bridge pickup.  It's loud and it balances perfectly volume and tone-wise with any of the WR models listed above.

Technical & Application info:

Our pickups are over engineered and designed carefully so that wax potting has no detrimental effect on sound.  All Kinman's are wax potted and you have the freedom to utterly saturated their sound in distortion without a hint of microphonic feedback or howl because we don't use cheap molded plastic bobbins.

Our covers and baseplates are made of Nickel-Silver so there is no degradation of tonal nuances.

Pole spreads

  •  53mm bridge pickup with vintage Stratocaster or Telecaster bridge
  •  50mm bridge pickup for all other bridges -and- neck pickup with vintage Stratocaster or Telecaster bridge
  •  47.5mm neck pickup with all other bridges

Dimensions & Pickguard opening template & cavity routing template.

Mounting hardware (included)

  • 3 or 4 (3-48 UNC) mounting screws, Phillips drive (3 screws are preferable)
  •  Silicon rubber tube springs

Options

  •  Switchable Heavy & Lite versions
  •  Switchable Split Single Coil with Zero-Hum (WR Extra only)

Hook-up wires

  •  Robust single wires for soldering, requires effective shielding in wiring tunnels to prevent electrical buzz
  •  2 or 3 conductor shielded cable with or without Kinman Harness Plug.  Wiring connecting-tunnel shielding not required

Connection means

  •  For soldering
  •  Plug for Kinman Goodbye Soldering Harness

Cover options

  •  Polished Nickel-Silver.  Best sonic performance and immunity to feedback screech.  Suitable for relic-ing and deliberate aging
  •  Will lose it's mirror-like polish naturally in a few months unless you maintain it with occasional application of clear liquid guitar polish
  •  Gold plated with real Gold which has magnetic Nickel plating under the gold so expect a slight (almost imperceptible) loss of performance in the very high frequencies.
  •  With and without Kinman logo

Pot & Capacitor values

  •  Best with 250k Ohm volume pot.
  •  Tone pot is usually the same value as the volume but for a little more top end brightness can be 1meg or No-Load.
  •  Stock pots can actually measure as low as 262k.  Pots in our Goodbye-Soldering Harness are guaranteed to measure no less that 450k.
  •  Normal tone cap value of 0.022uF, 63 ~ 100 volt Polyester.  Smaller uF value lessen the severity of Treble cut, higher values increase it.
  •  The voltage rating of Caps is not important but 63 ~ 100 volt have thicker lead wires that are easy to work with and just look better.

Output Polarity

  •  In-phase with all other Kinman pickups
  •  In-phase with Gibson and Copy humbuckers
  •  Opposite phase to Fender Strat

We highly recommend consulting the Install Guide in the Technical section even if you think you know it all.  There is also a handy wiring diagram available.

We also highly recommend consulting the Adjust & Set-up page in the Technical section so you get the best out of your Kinman pickups.
